This is a song that I wrote only a few days before it was recorded and at the time, I only recorded it because it was so new - the bonus benefit for me being that I didn't really have spend much time rehearsing it! At the time I had one recording session booked per week, and in each session I had time to record and mix about 3 songs. That particular week I was really cramming to have 3 songs ready, so I decided that I'd record this song, and another one, Oasis, which I'd also written very recently. I was confident Oasis was a good song but not so sure about this one, so on the day of the session I told the producer, John Stuart to feel free to throw sonic ideas at me. He went out into a back room of the studio and returned with a rectangular metal thing with "Sherman" printed on it. Sherman was some kind of filterbank and we ran my effects through it. While I played the lead part of the song, John twiddled knobs and dials and those are the cool effects you can hear throughout the song. After hearing the playback of the as yet unnamed song, I decided that since the songs personality had been brought out into the open by this effects unit, it was only fitting to call the song "Sherman Says!".
